Price and costs

How much ISO 50001 implementation and certification costs: what the price consists of

The price cannot honestly be given as a single figure. It depends on the size of your operation, how much is already metered and documented, and on the certification body you choose.

What the price consists of

The cost of ISO 50001 comprises several separate components. We deliberately do not state specific amounts, as they vary significantly from case to case. We recommend obtaining a quotation based on your operation.

  1. System preparation and implementation: energy review, identification of significant energy uses, energy policy, objectives, processes and documentation. This can be done in-house, with a consultant or with documentation from a supplier.
  2. Metering and monitoring: sub-meters, data collection and evaluation of indicators (EnPI) and the baseline (EnB). If you already have metering in place, this item is lower.
  3. Training: management, energy manager, maintenance and production.
  4. Internal audit and management review: mandatory parts of the system, carried out by an internal or external auditor.
  5. Certification audit: carried out by an accredited certification body, usually in two stages (documentation review and implementation assessment).
  6. Surveillance audits and recertification: the certification body regularly verifies that the system is working.

What affects the price

  • Size and complexity of the operation: annual energy use, the number of energy sources and the number of significant energy uses. Under the requirements for certification bodies (ISO 50003), these determine, among other things, the length of the audit.
  • State of data and documentation: the more is measured and described, the less work is needed during implementation.
  • Number of sites and processes within the certification scope.
  • Chosen certification body and form of cooperation (own team, consultant, supplier).
  • Follow-up measures: investment in savings is a separate item and usually pays for itself.

How to reduce costs

Good source data saves the most: continuous metering and evaluation of consumption already during implementation make the energy review and indicators easier. It also helps to define the certification scope sensibly, use existing management systems (for example ISO 9001 or ISO 14001) and use documented savings (M&V) for improvement, which will recover part of the costs retrospectively. The Energy Infra Scan platform connects metering, indicators and documents, so audit materials are prepared from a single place.

When ISO 50001 is mandatory

Above a consumption of 85 TJ (23 611 MWh), ISO 50001 certification is mandatory; above 10 TJ it replaces the mandatory energy audit. Non-compliance can cost up to 5 000 000 CZK. The differences are explained on the page Energy audit or ISO 50001?. You can verify your situation in the obligation test.

FAQ

How much does ISO 50001 implementation cost?

There is no single price. It depends on the size and complexity of the operation, the amount of metering and documentation you already have, and the certification scope. A quotation based on your operation is needed.

What ongoing costs does ISO 50001 involve?

Besides running the system (internal audits, reviews, the energy manager's work), there are fees for the certification body's surveillance audits and, after several years, recertification.

How can I save on ISO 50001 implementation?

Use existing metering and documentation, define the scope sensibly, integrate the system with other standards and rely on monitoring data, which simplifies the energy review.
