Energy audit: what it is

A systematic assessment of energy consumption with proposed savings.

Updated: 5 November 2026Author: NetVoice s.r.o.

An energy audit is a systematic assessment of how an organisation or building uses energy, resulting in a written report with proposed cost-effective measures and their evaluation. In the Czech Republic it is regulated by Czech Act No. 406/2000 Coll. on Energy Management.

What the audit includes

The audit maps how much energy the operation consumes and for what purpose, assesses the condition of equipment and distribution systems, and proposes saving measures with estimated costs, savings and payback. The output is a report that can be used as a basis for investment decisions as well as for meeting the statutory obligation. The audit is prepared by an energy specialist authorised under the Act. Our energy audits are provided by our partner QC Group.

When an audit is mandatory

Under § 9 of Czech Act No. 406/2000 Coll. on Energy Management, the obligation arises where consumption exceeds 10 TJ (2 778 MWh) on average over the last three consecutive calendar years. The audit must be repeated at least once every four years. A certified ISO 50001 system replaces the audit and is mandatory above 85 TJ (23 611 MWh). An overview and deadlines can be found in the obligation test; non-compliance can cost up to 5 000 000 CZK.

Example from manufacturing

A manufacturing plant consumes electricity and gas totalling roughly 3 100 MWh per year (illustrative figure). It therefore exceeds the 2 778 MWh threshold and must arrange an audit. Calorific value is used when converting fuels, so it is advisable to have data from measurements and invoices.

Frequently asked questions

Is an energy audit the same as ISO 50001?

No. An audit is a one-off assessment with a report, whereas ISO 50001 is a permanent energy management system. However, certified ISO 50001 replaces the audit obligation. The differences are summarised on a separate page comparing the audit and ISO 50001.

How often is the audit repeated?

Under the Act, at least once every four years. Organisations with certified ISO 50001 are not required to have an audit.
