VSME: a sustainability reporting standard for small and medium-sized enterprises

A voluntary standard for sustainability reports of smaller companies.

Updated: 5 November 2026Author: NetVoice s.r.o.

VSME is a voluntary sustainability reporting standard designed for small and medium-sized enterprises. It was prepared by EFRAG, the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group, so that smaller companies can clearly share the environmental, social and governance data that customers and banks request from them.

What the standard contains

It has two levels: the Basic module, which covers the most important data, and the Comprehensive module with more detailed information. The Basic module includes, for example, the topic of energy and greenhouse gas emissions (designated B3), waste, employees and company governance.

Link to energy and emissions

Data on energy consumption and emissions must be supported by the data from which they are calculated. The Energy Infra Scan platform can process data on energy consumption and carbon footprint (GHG Protocol, Scope 1 and 2) and prepare it for the VSME report template. The standard itself does not require a fixed measurement format, but reliable data will make the work considerably easier.

Is VSME mandatory?

No, it is a voluntary standard. However, it becomes practically important if large customers or financing banks ask you for sustainability data. We therefore recommend following the current state of legislation with your adviser or auditor.

Frequently asked questions

Who is VSME intended for?

Small and medium-sized enterprises (including micro-enterprises) that are not subject to mandatory reporting but need to clearly communicate sustainability data to customers or banks.

How does VSME differ from the GHG Protocol?

The GHG Protocol is a methodology for calculating emissions. VSME is a broader reporting standard (environmental, social and governance data), which also includes data on energy and emissions.
